Natural dyeing

‘Eco-dyeing’ session today at the Workshops. Using the hot-processing technique as described by India Flint. Plant material and found metals added to pre-mordanted (with alum and cream of tartar) silk and secured in a bundle.

Put in the steamer for an hour…

… while we used the madder dye-bath

Onion skins, eucalyptus leaves, berberis and rusty nails unwrapped to find this brilliant pattern (work by Christine).

We also set up some solar dye baths. Marigolds, rose petals, oxalis, and others.

All waiting to be revealed at our next workshop…
